Session 1 – 40 minute

Balancing Act

Overview

Budgeting and planning for the future

Students learn about the importance of budgeting and saving.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Create a family budget.

  • Describe the advantages of having a planned budget

  • List the choices a family has to make spending and budgeting

Preparation

Review the session presentation and the materials list. Become familiar with the key terms.

Review the financial content to be presented and be prepared to discuss your own experience with the students.

Materials

Key Term

Scarcity: A situation in which people can’t have everything that they want because of limited resources.

Session Two – 40 minutes

Risk Taking

Overview

Students discover that life involves risks and that insurance helps to reduce the financial consequences. Students understand the need for protection from risk and that a person’s circumstances determine the level of cover required. Using role-play, students demonstrate how insurance can reduce costs for accidents relating to health, housing and motoring.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Identify the ways in which people try to avoid risks.

  • Explain the benefits of insurance.

  • Identify the opportunity cost of purchasing insurance cover.

Preparation

Review the activity and list of materials. Read the Student Worksheet “The Risk Story” and the “Risk Taking” game cards. Discuss with the teacher the best way to group the students and to arrange the classroom for students’ presentations.

Session Three – 40 minutes

Risk and Insurance

Overview

Students analyse different types of risk and become familiar with the types of insurance suitable for each one.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Identify different types of insurance and understand their importance in everyday life.

  • Understand the benefits of using insurance to cover the risks they are faced with during their lifetime.

Preparation

Review the activity and list of materials. Read the Student Worksheets “What kind of insurance do I need?”, “Types of Insurance” and “Make if Match Game”.

Session Four – 40 minutes

Investments – Benefits and Risks

Overview

Students gain an understanding of different types of investment opportunities available to individuals and how a person’s circumstances determine their risk profile. Students review character profiles and consider investment options.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Identify different forms of investment.

  • Understand that some forms of investment carry more risk than others.

  • Understand the role of insurance in financial decisions.

Preparation

Review the activity and list of materials. Read the case studies in the Student Workbook on Pages 6-9.

  • Student Workbooks

  • Attendees – 150

  • Groups – 5

  • Students – 30 per group

  • Volunteers – 10 / 2 per group
